Getting out this past month proved to be challenging. With my family trading colds back and forth, I only got to go out a few times. I kept to my local spot (Windansea Beach in La Jolla) to get in the water. With Daylight savings coming in early Dec, I chose to shoot in the mornings. I love the lighting and coloring that the sunrise offers. The wave shots are a perfect example of that. My favorite shot of the month had to be the image named frosty curl. This wave is closest that I have seen a La Jolla wave looking like a North Shore wave. Not to mention it was close to the size of a North Shore wave to boot. Shot settings, 1/1600, f/11, and iso640
The next shot I really liked because of how I was able to catch the wave and the sun right before the curtain covered it up…

The last wave shot was actually the very last click on a 3 hour session. It was also one of the few keepers i had from that session.

On clear days I have been trying desperately to get a good clear shot from the back of the wave. This was my best attempt at this from the month of Feb.

All water shots were shot with a Canon 7D, Canon 8-15 f/4 L Fisheye in a SPL water housing.

My last two shots were taken on the same day after getting out of the water. It was high tide and the Windansea Shack was under attack. While walking to the shack to get the previous shot, I was about to be dive bombed by this local.

Mathew contacted me asking if he could send stuff in and of course I was accepting. Mathew is part of the new breed of young photographers as opportunities have opened the door for artsts to express themselves thanks to the cost saving equipment like GoPro. At 14 years young he seizes the opportunity.

Here are some photos. You can pick out your favorites. As for a story the one above is pretty much my overall story. I saved up my money for a year to buy a GoPro so that I could take pictures like all the people who inspired me. Now I am trying to fulfil my dream of being the next Clark Little.

My name is Brendan Fallon, and I am 20 years old from Toms River NJ. I have been shooting since June 2012. Every time I go out to shoot i have one goal in mind. For my photos to stand out, and paint a picture for everyone. Wether I’m shooting my friends surfing, skating or even landscapes I try to grasp the image how I see it. I want the viewer to look at the photo and be able to picture themselves there at that very moment the picture was captured.

Photography helps me understand what I see through the lens.
My motivation is simple: immortalize something worth remembering.

In summer 2012 I undertook a photographic project with some friends documenting life around surfing in our hometown.
Sharing golden moments of instantaneous joy, capturing fragments of our daily trips along that coastline we call “home” was the aim of the project.
We started to document every swell, from southern Tuscany to northern Liguria and we shot in every condition, from perfect glassy waves to windy close outs, sunny or rainy.
Devotion is driving us through this project, bringing me and my friends together to share this unique experience of the beauties within our region.
The following shots are a small selection from a collection that is a work in progress.

Here is a sample of my surf photos I’ve been working on the last few years all over the world.
A few words about them: I use a digital camera with an analog-broken 110 mm lens that can’t focus anymore. This is why my photos are blurry. I’m a bit bored by all that ‘‘porn surf photography’’ featuring close-up actions and fake lifestyle shots. I’m more inspired by painting currents, such as impressionism and abstract expressionism.
I’m trying to focus on our environnement and the visions that make us love surfing, not only for the ride but also for what’s around us. We sometimes forget our surroundings, those insignifiant details we pass by. I think they’re a big part of surfing, more than a 10 feet barrel or a any air that most of us won’t ever pull.

2484 and 2548: Both shots of the Huntington Beach wonder kid, 12/28/12. I know his name but won’t use it because I’ve never met him…just a neurosis of mine. When I shoot surfers I try to use an ISO that will give me shutter speeds around 1/1000th and aperture at f8…usually ISO400 but in shot 2484 I was using ISO640. When the light starts to fade, I switch to ISO100 and shoot at about 1/60th like here in shot 2548— the ‘speed blur’ as some call it. Speed blurs look a lot better if you’re shooting, say, Pipeline…but I live behind the Orange Curtain and have to deal with usually crappy conditions and hideous light. Probably won’t make the cover of the Surfer’s Journal but I like my speed blurs…amd lots of clone stamping to blot out the dust spots from the ol’ image sensor.

3571: Early morning 1/5/13, south side HB pier…air and water cold enough to grow Polar Bears. Swell had dropped some from the day before, but still some head-high to slightly overhead waves south of the pier. This is about a 3-4’ island scale wave. Barely light so I used the highest ISO my Canon 5D has, ISO3200…super grainy shot but sort of cool. I rarely take morning shots because I’m a night owl. I drank so much coffee the night before I could not sleep.

3717: Right before the sun came up, same day, ISO100, 1/25th.

3744: Same day (as are the rest), ISO100, 1/50th…I was shooting in aperture priority f8…wish the waves had been at least twice as big. And I wish I looked like Ryan Gosling but this is winter down Newport way. Actually surfed the day before at 17th street (HB) and there were a couple of DOHsets but mostly close-outs. I caught 3 waves in 3 hours and surfed like the old kook that I am. Lost about 25 lbs just paddling against the current. And what’s up with this 53 degree water? Weeks now…Newport Lifeguards recorded 49 degree water the other day…

3784: Just after the sun came up. Had to do some work on the over-exposed areas under the lip.

3979: Didn’t recognize this guy but he was really good.

4189: I think I’ve photographed this guy before but don’t know who he is…really good surfer as well. I usually just shoot until my CF card fills up and then vamoose, not much of a social butterfly which is probably not good for selling images.

I apologize in advance at how garish some of my images are…I do all my editing on a little Dell 1420 so sometimes when I look at my shots on a higher resolution screen I just want to vomit. I’m in the process of migrating all my stuff over to better desktop— hopefully my shots will improve.
