My name is Chris Kinsel, i am 15 years old out of Belmar, NJ. I have been shooting for about a year now. I have been always had a passion for surfing and when I got into photography it only made sense to shoot what I love.
      I love shooting people but i also enjoy shoot the landscapes around them. In my work i try to focus on the human-environment interaction. Yes, I shoot the physical action of surfing but i try to steer more toward the lifestyle/culture part of surfing. I want to show people what goes on behind the scenes, not just surfers surfing. I want to give the perspective the everyday person doesn’t  get to see.

       Everyone thought the Mayans finished their calendar to say that the end of the world would happen on December 21, 2012. However these theorists were wrong the Mayans predicted one of the best swells to hit the Jersey Shore in 2012. After being battered and bruised by Sandy, it’s great to have something to take out minds off of all the devastation. For surfers there is no better distraction than head high A-frames all day. Unfortunately I held captive by the monster called public school on “Doomsday” and missed seven hours of perfect cold water barrels. The first two photos were taken on this day and the pictures speak for themselves. The one picture was taken at a longer exposure with a smaller aperture to show movement across the face of the wave. The shadows of the shot worked out perfectly for the look I was trying to get as well. The last picture was of the day after the swell. Although the waves were not as great as compared to their predecessors I did find a shot worth posting. I found a block of solid wood with massive nails sticking out of the top of this water hazard. It eventually washed up on the shore and I took advantage of this prop I was given to set up an interesting photo. I kept the debris in focus while I waited for a set to come in to set a good background for the object. Swells like these make the craziness of the holiday season, and life and general a little bit more tolerable.

Hurricane Sandy has completely demolished certain sections of the Jersey Coast. Nevermind the power, internet and phone service it out. Some people’s home are GONE. Nothing left but the stench of gas from the severed underground lines. I walked through Long Branch and Sea Bright in the aftermath. I helped a friend rip the drywall and floor out of his family’s home. I walked through Union Beach. People’s lives were on the curb and stranger’s boats were in their yards. Power is slowing coming back in some neighborhoods. In others it is cold and dark. A Nor’easter is said be on it’s way, a storm surge and 60mph gusts is not something we need right now.

I am grateful and lucky my family has been spared and I pray for those who are directly effected by this storm’s wrath. Rebuilding is going to take a long while, this is a consequential event that will go down as a cataclysmic storm in Jersey history.
