Moon Series: Shooting does not need to stop once the sun goes down. There are many subjects of interest that can be shot in the dark of night. One of my favorites to shoot is the moon! That was a tricky one to tackle though, because of the lighting challenges. Being self taught, it took some practice with my manual settings to get it right. For each evening, those settings would need to change. A tri-pod is a must in this circumstance as the moon, or anything else in your viewfinder will not be in focus. After discovering that, I just played with the settings until I achieved my desired result. Long exposure can be fun to experiment with, as well. In this series, I have given you shots from various evenings/early mornings.
For the pier shot, I headed to the end of the San Clemente Pier a looked back towards town as the moon was rising out of the east. I used long exposure for this one as it really brought out the lights of the buildings and homes in my town of San Clemente. I love the gorgeous trail of light reflected on the water’s surface.
The 3 photos titled Moon Glow Over Water 1, Moon Glow Over Water 2, and Orange Moonset were all shot on the same recent very early morning, but at different stages of the moon set. I am fortunate to have an amazing view from my home and am up very early for work. I could see the bright glow coming from outside as I stumbled out of bed. Eyes barely opened, I hurried to my deck with my gear to get those shots. Sometimes being the early bird pays off! I have seen and shot some visions of beauty while most people are still dreaming.
On the evening I shot the Solo Moon, this particular full moon seemed so bright and close to earth. It’s amazing to think that man has visited that planet on numerous occasions. I enjoy seeing it in all its various stages. There’s something about a night on the beach under the moon and stars that’s incredibly romantic.
Lastly, my Sunset Crescent Moon shot. It’s just a sliver of a beautiful moon hanging over San Clemente Island on a warm Indian Summer evening. The colors of the sunset accessorizing our amazing planet that is a fixture engrained in our lives as much as the planet we live on.
