Cody has been on the North Shore this past winter and just sent us this gem. I knew Cody thru the Advertising world and I remember when he said “im gonna get a camera and start shooting”. Since then he has captured some amazing images from above and below the sea. Having been trained as an Art Director he truly has an eye for composition.

Getting out this past month proved to be challenging. With my family trading colds back and forth, I only got to go out a few times. I kept to my local spot (Windansea Beach in La Jolla) to get in the water. With Daylight savings coming in early Dec, I chose to shoot in the mornings. I love the lighting and coloring that the sunrise offers. The wave shots are a perfect example of that. My favorite shot of the month had to be the image named frosty curl. This wave is closest that I have seen a La Jolla wave looking like a North Shore wave. Not to mention it was close to the size of a North Shore wave to boot. Shot settings, 1/1600, f/11, and iso640
The next shot I really liked because of how I was able to catch the wave and the sun right before the curtain covered it up…
Settings 1/1250 sec, f/9 and iso640
The last wave shot was actually the very last click on a 3 hour session. It was also one of the few keepers i had from that session.

On clear days I have been trying desperately to get a good clear shot from the back of the wave. This was my best attempt at this from the month of Feb.

All water shots were shot with a Canon 7D, Canon 8-15 f/4 L Fisheye in a SPL water housing.

My last two shots were taken on the same day after getting out of the water. It was high tide and the Windansea Shack was under attack. While walking to the shack to get the previous shot, I was about to be dive bombed by this local.

Maverick’s Invitational Big Wave Contest 2013

After a 2 year wait, conditions were finally right and the decision was made to hold the Big Wave competition at Maverick’s in Half Moon Bay California, Sunday January 20, 2013. This would be the second time I was able to shoot the contest from a boat. The epic swell of the 2010 contest was the first. Conditions were very clean, with light offshore winds and not a cloud in the sky. With a 13-15 foot swell at a 18+ second period, meant that there would be a long lull in between sets of up to 20 minutes with an inconsistent wave size. Some Heats only saw a couple of decent sets push through making wave selection critical for the competitors to make it through to the next round. Local knowledge was definitely helpful making it into the finals with 3 of the 6 finalist hailing from Santa Cruz.

Photo 1 - Pre Contest warm up session saw quite a few decent sized glassy sets push through.

Photo 2 - Shawn Dollar and Ken ‘Skindog’ Collins taking a moment to assess the situation prior to Heat 1 as the sun comes up.

Photo 3 - Plenty of boats were out, making viewing difficult. Getting decent shots was very challenging. Compared to the 2010 contest, there were a lot more boats out. The Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol were also directing the larger boats to circle around counter clockwise in a big loop reducing the window to get a decent viewing angle. It was all a matter of luck of where the boat you were on was when the next set pushed through.

Photo 4 - With clean conditions and long lulls between sets, competitors seemed to be pushing the envelope a bit more. Here’s a 3 shot sequence of Shawn Dollar getting covered-up in the Semi-finals Heat 1.

Photo 5 - Peter Mel in red and Dave Wassel in white getting tangled-up on the drop in Round 1 Heat 1 while Ken Collins in yellow watches it unfold. The clean conditions also allowed for quite a few double take-offs. One going left, the other right.

Photo 6 - Zach Wormhoudt in the Semi Final Heat 2. Here he’s navigating through the tricky inside bowl section of the break. Zach would make it to the Finals and finish in 2nd.

Photo 7 - Shawn Dollar in green going right and Mark Healey in red taking the hard left line in Finals. Mark ended up taking 5th overall

Photo 8 - Peter Mel in red taking a more critical line and Shawn Dollar in blue in Semi Finals Heat 1. Mel would end winning the competition with Shawn taking 6th.

As I was sitting there the sky was amazing as created that beautiful winter almost spring lighting. I grabbed my camera and leica lens and rode my bicycle thru towns capturing these images of life, culture & lifestyle.

Mathew contacted me asking if he could send stuff in and of course I was accepting. Mathew is part of the new breed of young photographers as opportunities have opened the door for artsts to express themselves thanks to the cost saving equipment like GoPro. At 14 years young he seizes the opportunity.

Here are some photos. You can pick out your favorites. As for a story the one above is pretty much my overall story. I saved up my money for a year to buy a GoPro so that I could take pictures like all the people who inspired me. Now I am trying to fulfil my dream of being the next Clark Little.

Ive been in the process of completing a short film for Enjoy Handplanes and over the weekend I did a little photo shoot capturing these images using my Canon with my fav lens (1970’s Olympus 50mm with adapter ring) I love shooting everything manual with this lens as it allows all natural infractions, focus and other artifacts to bounce thru the glass and create amazing images.

PHOTOGRAPHER BRENDAN FALLON

My name is Brendan Fallon, and I am 20 years old from Toms River NJ. I have been shooting since June 2012. Every time I go out to shoot i have one goal in mind. For my photos to stand out, and paint a picture for everyone. Wether I’m shooting my friends surfing, skating or even landscapes I try to grasp the image how I see it. I want the viewer to look at the photo and be able to picture themselves there at that very moment the picture was captured.
